Restore or Home Therapy Decision-How to know which is right

When you are torn on how to proceed with a patient’s treatment to either perform a restorative/elective procedure or giving the patient a chance to correct the condition with home therapy, it can be difficult to determine which is right for the patient. Instead of doing nothing in the face of making the wrong decision, let the patient make the decision that’s right for them.

Say this:

“You have a decision to make. One decision would be to get this fixed today. There is plenty of evident that this tooth is going to need a X very soon. The other decision is for you to go the home therapy route. That means we will do X [varnish, sealant, send you with a Rx for Peridex, a bottle of Chlorohexidine) today, which are excellent preventative measures. Then at home you will X (rinse with the Chlorohexidine, use Floridex, Peridex, use a Sonic Care toothbrush, floss, etc.) every day. If you are committed to doing these things we may even be able to avoid this restorative work.

Which decision is right for you: fix it today or do the home therapy work?”
